Coal Miner and Pit Pony

PIT PONY AND MINER WORKING UNDERGROUND IN A LANARKSHIRE COAL MINE, circa 1900.

Coal mining was a vitally important industry in Lanarkshire, with the Lanarkshire Coalfield one of the largest in Scotland. Coal had been mined in the area for centuries, and at its peak in 1910, 220 of Scotlands 499 collieries were located in the region, with 45,000 men employed underground, and another 9000 men and 1200 women on the surface. Despite this dominance the industry was in decline, with more pits closing than were opening. The last deep pit finally closed in 1983, bringing an end to this once-proud industry.

The re-created mine at Summerlee takes the visitor underground to experience the conditions under which coal was mined from the late 18th to the 20th century. Entrance to the mine is free, and is by guided tour only. Tours leave from the adjacent cottages at regular intervals.
