Summerlee Ironworks was founded in 1837 Wilson and Company. At its maximum the works had 8 furnaces producing 2100 tons of pig iron per week and employing around 400 people. The iron works suffered the same decline as those in other parts of Scotland, eventually closing in the early 1930's. In 1985 excavations were conducted by the Manpower Services Commission and the extensive remains of the ironworks uncovered. These have been preserved in-situ as part of the Summerlee experience and can now be viewed from a purpose-built walkway with interpretation boards telling the story of iron production at Summerlee.
