Built on the site of the former Motherwell swimming pool, the Heritage centre was opened in November 1996. The building is a two storey curved block with a five storey viewing tower set into the main wall. The tower gives commanding views across Lanarkshire and the Clyde Valley. Motherwell Heritage Centre enables the history of the district to be preserved for future generations and at the same time promote the heritage of the area to both the local community and to visitors. Motherwell Heritage Centre is a four star Scottish Tourist Board Commended visitor attraction and winner in 1997 of the best audio visual programme for the 'Technopolis' gallery in the Scottish Museum of the Year awards. The centre also houses a local history research centre, holding important archives and genealogy resources, and has a year-round programme of temporary exhibitions, with a wide range of exhibitions to suit all ages and interests.
